Yoga Nidra is a form of deep relaxation eliciting the Parasympathetic response in your nervous system. It moves you out of Fight/Flight and into Rest and Digest. Nidra refers to “yogic sleep”. This transformative practice is phenomenally healing, integrating for trauma and injury and allows us to find more bandwidth to handle the daily stresses of our lives. Done regularly, even daily, Yoga Nidra trains your mind/brain to switch off, feel safe and calibrate to a more functional state of mind, body and heart. We cannot change what has happened, we can change how we relate to that.
Trauma is stored in our body, as said: “Our issues are in our tissues”. Thus, relaxing the deepest layers of muscle, fascia and organ tissue will allow us the kind of healing that requires us to simply lie back (can be done sitting up if preferred), get cozy and breath.
Each of these yoga nidras is done with a guided focus, all you have to do is listen, and your body will do the rest.
Prepare yourself by creating a quiet (as possible or use headphones) space, support your head and if lying down, behind your knees with a pillow and cover up to help your body feel contained and held. A weighted blanket is excellent for Yoga Nidra or any type of cover that feels cozy. Cover your eyes if you prefer to block out light and let the unfolding come. You may decide to head off to sleep, or even go about your activities, but do allow time to transition if you are back to activity.
Feel free to let me know how this was for you, denise@divinelightyoga.com, and for any concerns or questions you may have. Remember, you are held, you are loved and you are already whole, this will remind you of that!
